Are Motivational Speakers the Answer?

I was fired today by my boss’s boss.

I received a message to call the regional supervisor of a company where I had just done my first session.  I asked the employees that came into the room to list the reasons why this was a good place to work.  They only gave two.  “It’s a job and it’s a paycheck.” Oops, I knew I had my work cut out for me.

They were a bit more expressive when I asked them to list what they would change or improve to make their job better.  They started with “Better Communication” and added more like “Teamwork” and “Organization.”  They were on a roll with words, but when it came to action, eating the pastry treats were more to their liking.  Did I mention that I had my work cut out for me?

When I later met with the manager, we reviewed the depth of training that would be needed.  He had hired me to raise the bar for his people so they would improve attitude and productivity.  He left that first session in a bit of shock over how his employees demonstrated a “just doing my job” stance that didn’t really invite opportunities to change or improve.

As I listened to the regional supervisor on the phone, he thought there would be just one training and not a whole series.  He then said that he had a motivational speaker on staff and would not need my services.  He did not want my input.  I was fired.

Hey, all that’s needed is a motivational speaker.  You want change, improvement, teamwork or greater productivity?  Get a motivational speaker.  It’s that simple, right?

Why is it that so many people in authority follow illusions?  Do they really believe that SPEAKING causes people to change?  Ask parents who repeatedly tell their teenager to clean their room or do their homework how that works.  Have they not used the proper words?  Should they get a motivational speaker?

Should we hire motivational speakers to remind us of the rules, the policies or those ten commandments?  Is all that’s needed is a motivational speaker to get people to lose weight, build skills or succeed?  Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting a difference?

HEY, WAKEUP!

Ok, I lost my job with that company but now I’m coaching the manager who is that motivational speaker.  Perhaps the regional supervisor is the next step.  Should I speak to him?
